Fitness Tip Of The Day Biography

Source(google.com.pk)
Yesterday, and today, too, were mornings that if I weren’t already a runner, I would convert. I wore capris; long sleeves but no jacket; gloves but removed them. The breeze was minimal and the sky — oh, Lord, the sky.

Most truly, when I glanced upward as I started down my block, I gasped. Not at the stars, though they were beautiful, too. No, ’twas the sky — a blue unlike any blue I remember seeing. Not in a Crayola box; not on a paint chip; not even in my most vivid and colorful and wonderful of dreams.

If you missed it today, I’m betting it will be there tomorrow. Step outside between 6 and 6:15 to walk, or run, or just to put your neighbors’ newspaper on their porch. Then look up, and swallow hard.

Fitness Tip of the Day: Embrace the jumping jack

Voila: The lowly jumping jack...not. (Michael Ainsworth/Staff Photo)

I will confess that when I wrote my One Perfect Exercise story, I was disappointed that nary an expert mentioned jumping jacks. So I will right here:

Jumping jacks.

In my humble, fitness-nag opinion, these elementary-school-gym-class staples rock. I start my day off doing 100 of them and also use them as part of the various little routines I do some days. They lead off the Scientific Seven-Minute Workout, followed by 11 other exercises done for 30 seconds each with a 10-second break.

On Fridays when I work at home, I do jumping jacks as I reheat my coffee. Just now, heating water for tea, I did alternated doing 15 seconds of jumping jacks with 15 seconds of countertop push-ups till the microwave timer went off.

Jumping jacks are versatile, too. You can do the basic clap-hands-over-head-as-legs-go-outward type, of course. I alternate those with another kind that do the same leg movement but use the arms like this:

OK, I can’t demonstrate right here. But I’ll do my best to explain: Stick your arms ou straight out to your sides while your legs are straight — making a T, if you will. Then as you jump outward, bend your elbows, bringing your fists to your chest. Feet together, arms out; feet apart, arms in. Nifty, huh?

One more I do: I hold my little three-pound weights while I do the original gym-class variety.

So there you have it. Jumping jacks. Who woulda thought?

Fitness tip of the day: Walk. Even when it’s not National Walking Day

Walk today for National Walking Day, and tomorrow for yourself (Dallas Morning News/MCT)

Today, as you may have heard, is National Walking Day. Sponsored by the American Heart Association, it’s a united effort to get people out of their chairs and onto sidewalks and paths, treadmills and staircases.

Some will wear red shoelaces (like the ones I received but gave to my mom and to my editor’s 8-year-old son) to symbolize heart health. Others will wear flip flops (not the best idea for foot health, but what the heck). Maybe office groups will hold walking meetings, as suggested on the National Walking Day page.

It’s a grand idea, especially on a day like today — humid but not in a drenched-armpits-summer kind of way. Breezy but not in a knock-you-to-the-ground kind of way.

I could talk about the benefits here, how walking can help fight coronary artery disease and do all kinds of other good things for your body. But I’d rather talk about what it does for your spirit, your soul, your psyche…which, in turn, can’t help but benefit the physical part of you, too.

When you walk, you breathe deeply. You feel in control. You see houses you’d never noticed, flowers with colors you’d swear came from a Crayola box. You smile at strangers even before they smile at you. You squint at the sun or ogle the moon. You get a catch in your throat because the clouds are so beautiful, or the sunset — no matter how many times you’ve seen one — so golden, and way too fast.

Maybe you listen to music or NPR. Or maybe you let the sounds of dogs barking or children laughing or bikes being pedaled or sprinklers turning on be your soundtrack.

Come tomorrow, even though it’s not National Walking Day any more, you think back on those precious few minutes you spent outdoors and how you felt. And you think, ya’ know, I think I may just do that again.
